Quality Manager

Quality lies at the heart of the delivery of pathology services and has become second nature within pathology since the creation of laboratory accreditation. As Quality Manger it is your responsibility to ensure all aspects of quality within a quality management system function correctly, this includes adherence to relevant professional standards and guidelines, and involvement with clinical governance issues and audit.

With such a wide and varied responsibility and workload, the Quality Manager is under significant pressure to incorporate Quality Assurance across all laboratory processes. This pressure is increased and intensified with improvement and cost-cutting conditions. You must ensure an effective document control system is in place and regular clinical governance and audit meetings are held. A strategy must also be in position to ensure dissemination of information within the laboratory. An appraisal system and personal development plans should be implemented and a system should be operational for the recording and addressing of complaints, incidents and errors and to ensure corrective or preventative action is taken and outcomes recorded.
